Description

Jaap Ravelli was born in 1916 in Princenhage (NL). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In 1947, he founded Potterie Ravelli in Valkenburg (ZH). In the early years, the pottery produced simple everyday objects such as vases and tableware. In the 1950s, he produced black-and-white sculptural objects, often with an African theme, and in the 1960s, the well-known birch bark vases and pots. In later years, the factory produced vases and pots in modern colors, including orange. After the Potterie closed in 1977, Jaap Ravelli continued to create unique pieces, which he fired in a small kiln. Jaap Ravelli passed away on April 1, 2011.
