Description

Luit van der Helm (Noordwolde 1954-) grew up in Noordwolde surrounded by rattan furniture. In the 1980s, he focused on designing furniture made of rattan cane on a metal frame. In the 1990s, he created surprising combinations of oak and Lloyd Loom. For the Oirschot firm Teurlincx & Meijer, he designed the Jade series in these materials, with which he won the Home Trade Center Trophy in 1997. He also won this prize in 1998 with the Borobodur dining set, also for Teurlincx & Meijer. With his company Van der Helm Design, Van der Helm continued the tradition of rattan furniture, partly with production in Noordwolde and partly produced elsewhere and assembled in Noordwolde. Van der Helm demonstrated that rattan furniture can perfectly align with changing interior trends. In addition to rattan, Van der Helm continues to design furniture in wood, metal, and fabric for many domestic and international companies. His chairs from the 1980s and 1990s are enjoying growing interest and appreciation. In 2003, the Vlechtmuseum organized a retrospective exhibition of Van der Helm’s work.
