Description
Wim Smits (1922-2012) was a well-known Dutch abstract-geometric artist. Smits attended his education at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam and later at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. His oeuvre consists of paintings, drawings, collages, objects, and spatial constructions. In much of his work, geometry, structure, repetition, and systematics are central. Titles like Analytical System Variations, Growth Process, and In Process of Construction show that he was interested in research into form and organization, rather than in figurative representation.
This ultra-minimalistic metal work of art is typical for his work. He sawed a shape out of a sheet of metal, after which he covered the cut-out part on the back with a new sheet. There is a subtle play of light and shadow with an almost meditative effect. In good condition with a minor, not disturbing scratch, 90x90x2 cm. Signed and dated at the back.
