Description

Hannie Mein (1933-2003) attended the evening classes at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where she was taught by Theo Dobbelman, among others. She married Freek Noppen in 1963. In 1969, the couple moved to Vinkega in Friesland. Mein had her studio and exhibition space in their farmhouse ‘het Bakhuis’.  Her husband took care of the business side. Mein made a lot of utilitarian pottery, but also unique pieces. Her work is recognizable by its naive style, often with stylized animal figures. In 1988, Mein was involved in the establishment of the Stichting Keramisten Noord-Nederland. In 2003, the ceramics gallery of the furniture boulevard in Wolvega was named after her. In the same year, a retrospective of her work was held in the Nationaal Vlechtmuseum in Noordwolde. The exhibition was designed by Mein herself, but she did not live to see the opening, having died a week before.

Hannie Mein was at her best when she created free work. Especially her bowls are breathtaking because of the subtle form and the wonderful glazes with a scandinavian or japanese vibe. This bowl from the 1980s is a very good exemple of her style. In very good condition, 29×6, fully signed Hannie Mein.
