Description

The Dutch artist Jos van Dormolen was born on January 9, 1926, in Rotterdam. He died in 2011. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. Van Dormolen was a very versatile artist, active on several fronts. He worked as: Glazier/stainer (window sections, designs for church windows), Wall painter & muralist,Ceramic artist (including wall reliefs, ceramic wall tiles). Some concrete examples of Van Dormolen’s work: A church window (design/vidimus) from 1947 for the Chapel “de Heilige Eik” (The Holy Oak) in Oirschot, with the theme “Mary & Jesus.” He first made a small design (vidimus), later the complete window (cartoon), and then the actual glasswork. A ceramic wall relief for a school in Gorinchem, one of his first commissions. Bronze sculptures in Asperen and Heukelum. A sculpture “Boy with Horse” in Asperen (“The Horse”) signed “jos v. dormmolen 70” – an example of his public sculpture work. His work is often monumental; that is, intended for public spaces or buildings, such as churches, schools, or in open spaces. He mastered various materials (glass, ceramics, bronze, paint) and techniques, which allowed him flexibility in his commissions. There is a certain tension in his work between figuration and abstraction: some sculptures and elements are figurative (human, animal), while other works play with form and materiality without direct representation.

This impressive oilpainting on canvas is a wonderful example of his style and you can see and feel the influences of his other disciplines, especially his work in stained glass. Also is there a cubist influence. In very good condition, signed Jos van Dormolen 1965, 153x84x6
