Description

‘Zuiderzee chair’ by Richard Hutten, commissioned for the Zuiderzeemuseum and produced by NgispeN,  featured on exhibition with dutch furniture company NgispenN during Milan design week 2011. ‘Zuiderzee’ is based on a traditional dutch chair composed of wood and woven sticks or straw. In Hutten’s interpretation, smooth beech wood, subtle curves, and a slimmer profile offer the piece a contemporary aesthetic, whose basic form nonetheless references its historical origins. not merely ornamental, however, the design details are responsible for a considerable decrease in weight and significantly increased comfort of the chair.

Hutten:

Originally commissioned by the Zuiderzee Museum Enkhuizen, Hutten designed the Zuiderzee chair. He took the typology of the most common traditional Dutch chair for many centuries, the ‘knob-chair’. The ingenious construction is very light weight. The sticks give strengt in the horizontal and vertical direction, while the thin and light seat and back give strength in the other directions.

The bending of the seat is stretching the traditional bended veneer plywood to it’s limited, almost looking like a leather slap folded around the sticks. Part of the permanent collection of The Zuiderzee museum Enkhuizen.
