Description

A beautiful ‘Kifwebe’ mask, used in the ceremonial practices of the Songye-people in Congo. The high comb and half-closed eyes indicate that this is a male mask. It features parallel painted lines and the characteristic square mouth. The holes along the edge are used for attaching raffia. In good condition, but ons of the sides is missing for a part and there is a crack in the other side. But this material condition in no way detracts from the appearance of this object and emphasizes its authenticity. From a private collection, acquired in the 1960s. H. 55, w. 30, d. 34
