Description

Gjalt Blaauw (born 15 January 1945 in the Frisian village Grou) is a Dutch sculptor. Blaauw trained at the Minerva Academy in the city of Groningen, where he was taught by Karl Pelgrom, among others. After his education, Gjalt Blaauw joined the Institute for Creative Work (ICW) in Finsterwolde. The ICW made work as a group, who made what was not important. The group existed for two years. Blaauw then focused entirely on stone carving. His first work, ‘Mannetje’ (1972), was placed in the Noorderplantsoen in Groningen in 1975. After this sculpture, Blaauw moved away from figurative work and started working more associatively. He stopped naming his works because in his opinion people should have their own freedom in this. At the end of the eighties, Blaauw also started working with iron. Works by Blaauw can be found in the Netherlands in Assen, Groningen, Nijmegen, Voorburg and Zwijndrecht, and elsewhere in Belgium and France. This abstract sculpture in sheets of iron is made in two parts. In very good condition, with a characteristic patina, 50x23x32
