Description
Beautiful drawing ink on paper, ‘Nei tsjerke/Going to church’ by the Frisian artist Pier Feddema, member of the group of expressionist artiststs ‘Yne’line’, the Frisian counterpart of the wellknown group De Ploeg from the neighbouring province of Groningen. Pier Feddema was born on 2 June 1912 as a farmer’s son in Anjum. At primary school in Anjum he already excelled in drawing. He went to the Kweekschool in Dokkum and obtained his certificate of competence as a teacher at the age of 19. He was immediately able to start working as a teacher at the Christian Rehobothschool in Hemrik. While boarding with baker Dijkstra in Wijnjewoude he met Tite, whom he married in 1938. After the war the Feddemas moved to Groningen where Pier became a drawing teacher at the “Kleuterkweek”. After working for a short time as a drawing teacher at the U.L.O. in Balk, the family moved to Drachten where he worked at the Ichtus College until his retirement in 1977. Shortly afterwards Pier and Tite returned to Balk where Pier died in 1983 at the age of 71.
His talent for drawing took flight when he met Johan Bolding, a painter/drawer from Groningen. Later he took inspiring drawing lessons from Herman Dijkstra, a member of the Groningen Art Circle De Ploeg. After the war he met Jan van der Bij, Klaas Koopmans, Sjoerd Huizinga and Jaap Rusticus, among others. They regularly met to paint and draw and called themselves as a group: Yn’e Line. In the fifties and sixties they really broke through with their expressive work. Pier Feddema developed his own visual language. From the expressive he went in search of the simple play of lines. He himself said about his art: “In nature I abstract my drawings to a visual expressionism. My portraits are characteristics of the personality and not a carefully researched realism. My landscapes are a thinking and feeling in paint, grandiose earthly imaginations.”
