Description

The artistic pre-occupation of Rity Jansen Heijtmajer (1942) focuses on how shapes move in space. Born and living / working in Amsterdam, she expresses herself through a reduced imagery that is connected with the classic constructivist tradition. Her educational art studies were during the 1960’s, and her years at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam the most formative. Several grants also encouraged her to persevere in her chosen idiom and led to participation in exhibitions abroad.
Rity Jansen Heijtmajer often employs a quadrangle as a compositional format and builds the work with basic geometrical elements and colour planes. Expression is therefore achieved with limited formal ingredients and a spare use of colour; dividing a square into halves or quarters, mirroring triangles along an axis or point, reducing a rectangle to a square by a series of steps and using complementary colours or nuances of those colours.
